To create this list, Press Gazette used Ipsos’ ranking of the top online brand groups and selected the 50 biggest that Press Gazette considers to be based in journalistic content of any genre. This means Substack now reaches 6% of the UK population, more than US news website CNN which dropped off the top-50 list in March.

News network CNN, entertainment website Screenrant and business-focused publisher Forbes all saw the biggest month-on-month increases in their monthly audience.

Manchester-based digital media and youth content publisher LBG Media continued to grow in 2023. Hearst UK’s parent company, the US-based National Magazine Company, reported a profit before tax of £686,000 in 2023 but a £460,000 loss after tax. Nonetheless, owing in large part to the closures of products including Scottish radio station Pure Radio, several magazines and a holiday booking platform, overall revenue dropped nearly £27m year-on-year. In its following accounts, published this month, pre-tax profit rose to £93.8m, of which £92m was attributed to the company’s financial assets and £1.8m to the performance of the core businesses. After a difficult 2020, the company’s finances bounced back in 2021 and in 2022 the company reported “its strongest year for more than a decade”.

And top of this list have to be the counties Devon and Cornwall, with their wealth of amazing coastline, coves and cafes! I know the UK has a lot of great pubs and beautiful green spaces for walks but, top of my list in both those categories, it has to be the amazing Yorkshire Dales. With loads of craft breweries springing up across the country, there’s plenty of beers and ales to try, and from traditional boozers to gastro-pub delights, choosing a good spot to sip on one shouldn’t be hard!

Summer in Britain: Festivals, events and activities

The biggest month-on-month audience declines were at Nottinghamshire Live (down 20.3% to 3.6 million) and Radio Times (down 18.7% to 6.1 million). The biggest month-on-month audience growth in June was at Reach regional Devon Live, which was up by a third to reach 5.3 million people. Reach sister title the Mirror was up 2.8% month on month but down 8% year on year to 20.7 million. The Daily Express was the biggest winner in the top ten by audience, rising by 2.2% month on month but 31% compared to June last year, reaching 18.5 million.
